Representações dos africanos-americanos em "Do the right thing" de Spike Lee

O título do trabalho “As Representações dos Africano-Americanos em Do the Right Thing de Spike Lee remete-nos para dois objectos de estudo diversos. Por um lado, o realizador e a sua obra; por outro, a vida e as imagens materiais ou mentais dos Africano-Americanos na América dos dias de hoje. A partir de um esquema da sócio-semiótica procurei interpretar o filme, nos seus aspectos da produção, circulação e consumo de produtos comunicativos. Comparei-o com outras obras cinematográficas do mesmo realizador para ter uma imagem mais realista, vinda de dentro, da situação dos Africano-Americanos na sociedade americana. No filme analisei os estereótipos raciais e as expressões culturais; a técnica do realizador e as estratégias discursivas, bem como algumas perspectivas de recepção. Elaborei ainda uma reflexão pessoal crítica a partir das leituras que fiz de estudos de antropólogos, sociólogos e críticos de cinema. Este trabalho pretende testemunhar que estes filmes têm uma função didáctica, na medida em que podem ser utilizados para o estudo e ensino das culturas e das relações inter-étnicas neles representadas.

The title of the dissertation “The Representations of African-Americans in Do the Right Thing by Spike Lee”, leads us to two diverse objects of study. On one hand, we have a director and his film, on the other, the life and material and mental images of African-Americans in contemporary America. Using a theoretical scheme from the field of social-semiotics I tried to analyze the film, in its aspects of production, circulation and consumption of communicative products. I compared it with other works from the same director to get a clearer picture, from the inside, of the situation of African-American society. In the film I analyzed the racial stereotypes and the cultural expressions; the director technique and the discursive strategies, as well as some perspectives on reception. I also wrote a personal critical reflection based on the reading of studies from anthropologists, sociologists and cinema critics studies. I wish to testify with this work that these films have a didactical function, in that they can be used to study and teach cultures and the inter-ethnical relations in them represented.
